Special service to remember loved ones at Christmas in Downpatrick

7 December 2022

A SPECIAL Christmas service for people who have lost loved ones in recent times will take place in Downpatrick this weekend.

The service organised by the churches of the Lecale Area Mission Partnership will take place in Down Parish Church on Sunday at 5.30pm.

Entitled ‘Remembering Our Loved Ones at Christmas’, the service will include traditional readings and carols, but will be more low-key than a typical carol service — with space for reflection and prayer.

The aim is to create a space for those who find the Christmas difficult as they continue to live with a loss.

The Dean of Down the Very Rev Henry Hull, said: “We have been in touch with those whose funerals have been conducted in our churches, but we are keen that the invitation is extended to everyone who might find such a service useful.

“At the service the liturgy is shaped to give time and space to remember those whom we love but who are no longer with us. The aim being to create a safe place to come as we are before God.”

He added: “During the service there will be an opportunity to pray silently for oneself and, if anyone would like to, a special time to light a candle or leave a personally written prayer near to a cross at the front of the church.”

Everyone is welcome to attend the service.
