DOWNPATRICK Lions Club has a new president.

Mark Johnston has taken over from Seamus McMullan with his predecessor recently handing over thew chain of office during a meeting at the Lakeside Inn.

The outgoing chairman paid tribute to all non-Lions Club members who volunteered throughout his term of office. 

He said the Lions Club greatly appreciates their your support.

“Our quizzes, street collections, social functions and service activities such as the Downsound Talking Newspaper and spectacle collection, would not be the same without them,” he said.

Seamus continued: “Thank you all for the time and effort you have given to help the Lions have a successful year.”

Also during the recent meeting Lakeside Inn proprietor, Margaret Ferguson, was thanked for all the work she does for the Lions Club and local community.

Seamus said Margaret andGeoffrey have supported the Downpatrick Lions Club for many many years.

"We hold you, Margaret and your family, in the highest regard as a valued member of our local community. You contribute more than most to the area we all love and are a friend to many,” he continued.

“In recognition of your dedication, commitment, and service to the local community we are honoured to present you with the Melvin Jones Fellowship Award"  

The Fellowship was established in 1973 and is the highest form of recognition in the Lions Clubs International Foundation. It is recognition for outstanding dedication to humanitarian service and the work of the Lions Clubs.

During the former chairman’s year in office, over £6,000 was raised for local and international good causes, including the Downpatrick and County Down Railway, Fountain Foodbank, the Mind your Mate and Yourself charity, Lions International Appeal and Northern Ireland Children's Hospice.

The Lions Club would like thank the people of Downpatrick and surrounding area for their continued support.  

Members say the small change people in to its collection buckets, the used spectacles they pass on and the time they give, enable the Club to make positive change happen and to enrich the lives of others.
