First glimpse of skate park plans

First glimpse of skate park plans

24 July 2024

LOCAL people will be given a glimpse of Downpatrick’s new skate park and pump track at a special meeting this Friday evening.

The £415,000 project in Dunleath Park is being financed by the Department for Communities with an additional Newry, Mourne and Down Council contribution of £25,000.

The new facility is scheduled to open next March and two workshops are taking place at the Down Leisure Centre this Friday evening at 6pm and 8pm to explore design options based on the planning approval already secured by the local authority.

Hosted by nationally recognised designers Curve Studio, the interactive workshops will explore different styles and layout for the skate park and pump track and include the presentation of three different design concepts.

The first workshop is for the general public, which will focus on the park as a whole, while the second is for skaters and riders to explore more detail on their preferences for the specifics of the project.

The open meeting for the public runs between 6pm and 7pm, followed by the second meeting at 7pm for skateboarders, scooter and BMX riders. It will also run for one hour.

Ahead of the event, council chairman Pete Byrne said the skate park, supported by the Department for Communities, was identified as a high priority project in the Downpatrick Living High Streets Framework.
