ANOTHER key street in Downpatrick is in line for a streetscape improvement package.
Newry, Mourne and Down Council has secured funding from the UK Shared Prosperity Fund to carry out the work in St Patrick’s Avenue.
The scheme is integral to Downpatrick Regeneration Working Group’s plan to improve the town for residents, businesses and visitors through its Living High Streets Framework initiative.
Local councillor, Philip Campbell, has welcomed the planned investment and explained St Patrick’s Avenue will benefit from a new design concept that will improve building frontages and pathways in tandem with a new planting and tree installation scheme.
“The work will make St Patrick’s Avenue conservation area a more welcoming space which will be welcomed by residents and business owners in the town,” he said.
“This is a welcome step that issues in Downpatrick that were identified through the Living High Streets are now being addressed.”
News of the St Patrick’s Avenue scheme comes as work continues on a long overdue resurfacing scheme in Downpatrick town centre.
Significant stretches of Irish Street and Market Street are being resurfaced with the work coming after a large part of Church Street was also resurfaced several weeks ago.
Work began recently to resurface Market Street between the Irish Street and St. Patrick’s Avenue junction, while Irish Street is being resurfaced between the Edward Street and English Street junctions.
In addition, town centre traffic signals will also be upgraded as part of the investment, with night time diversions in place to allow contractors to complete the schemes. A number of roads are closed between 7pm and 6am.
The work has been designed to enhance road quality and improve town centre traffic flow in tandem with the traffic light upgrade.
