Duo avoid injury in aircraft crash

TWO people escaped serious injury after a light aircraft crash in Portaferry last Thursday.

Emergency services, including the Air Ambulance, were in attendance at the scene of the crash on the Abbacy Road shortly after midday.

It’s understood a flying instructor aged in their 70s and a learner were in the aircraft at the time of the incident. 

Both are understood to have suffered minor injuries after being trapped in the aircraft for a period of time, while it had landed upside down in a field near Portaferry.

A police spokesperson said its officers had attended the scene alongside emergency services colleagues after receiving a report that a light aircraft would have to make a forced landing just after 12.05pm.

“He said the two people on board exited the plane and had not sustained serious injuries with the matter passed to the Civil Aviation Authority for investigation.

The NI Ambulance Service confirmed it had attended the scene of the incident after an emergency call at noon last Thursday, with the Air Ambulance also tasked to the scene.
