DOWNPATRICK man William Wade received a “highly commended” prize at the prestigious Essential Skills award ceremony held at Hillsborough Castle recently.

The awards are designed to recognise and celebrate outstanding achievement in literacy, numeracy and ICT learning.

William, who studies at the South Eastern Regional College’s Newcastle campus, returned to education to gain qualifications to help develop his confidence and gain employment.

As a mature student, William has had to overcome a number of obstacles on his learning journey on his way to attaining an Essential Skills Literacy level 1 qualification.

Tutors say William has an “infectious enthusiasm” for study and that he’s currently working towards Entry Level 2 in Literacy and hopes to return to study in September to work towards the Entry Level 2 in Numeracy.

William, who left school at 16 with no qualifications, is now working part time in a local shop and says life has changed since achieving his qualification.

“Completing the Essential Skills course has given me a new found focus and allowed me to meet lots of new friends. I can honestly say that enrolling for the class was the best decision I have ever made. It gave me the ability to get a job, improve my career opportunities and I feel more confident in everyday life,” he added.

College principal and chief executive, Mr. Ken Webb, said the organisation is very proud of William’s success.

He added: “Being awarded a ‘highly commended’ accolade reflects the standard of work and effort William has put into his education. His success serves as an inspiration to anyone wishing to improve their essential skills and is a great illustration of the enjoyment and achievement that can be gained from returning to study.”
