Downpatrick gets improvement award

DOWNPATRICK racecourse has received a major accolade after being named most improved Irish racecourse in 2011 by leading bookmakers William Hill.

To mark the landmark achievement an award was presented to racecourse chairman Peter Stewart at the end of a recent meeting sponsored by William Hill.

Recent improvements include a rubber brick parade area addition to the paddock, a new horse walk way from the stables, a new horse lorry park and additional viewing areas for the public.

The crystal trophy presentation was made by Janet Whiteley, District Manager of William Hill in Northern Ireland.

Mr. Stewart said afterwards: "We are delighted with the award, especially from such a prestigious name as William Hill and thank them for the recognition and their continued sponsorship support."

Racecourse manager Richard Lyttle added: "The award was a surprise extra on the day while I received several complimentary comments from trainers and stable staff on the improvements during the afternoon."

Tony Kenny on behalf on William Hill, stated: "Downpatrick might be a country track but they continue to attract increasing support from racegoers, punters and the top trainers and jockeys.

"We felt the innovations prior to our fixture on Saturday warranted recognition with Downpatrick providing value for money racing to racegoers with ongoing improvements to the enclosure and benefits and facilities for the Irish horse racing Industry staff."
