A NUMBER of local politicians have welcomed a Roads Service commitment to provide a new bus shelter at the Corry’s Corner area in Drumaness.
But they are concerned that additional street lights have not yet been provided at this particular location at the Newcastle Road.
South Down MP Margaret Ritchie and Councillors Anne McAleenan and Patsy Toman have said the Roads Service is currently compiling a list of locations where bus shelters could be provided with finance which has to be spent before the end of the financial year.
Miss Ritchie said she hopes a new shelter can be provided at Corry’s Corner in the spring, with its provision welcomed by many in Drumaness and the surrounding area.
Councillor McAleenan said she is pleased the drive to provide a new shelter could soon come fruition as the provision of the facility at Corry’s Corner is a priority.
She added: “Down Council has a significant number of requests for bus shelter provision, but not the finances to provide them all.
Councillor Toman said for too long there has been no bus shelter at the Newcastle Road, explaining children waiting for school buses have no shelter. He said he’s delighted the Roads Service has acknowledged the need for a shelter at this location.”
Turning to requests for additional street lighting at Corry’s Corner, the local politicians say it must be provided as soon as possible as a footpath in the area is almost impassable because it’s so dark.
Miss Ritchie has asked roads officials to carry out an immediate assessment to ensure more street lighting is provided.
