Ballynahinch sex attack — pair sought

1 August 2012

DETECTIVES are investigating reports that a teenage girl was sexually assaulted in Ballynahinch last weekend.

It is understood the 17 year-old, believed to be from the Clough area, was walking with two men when the alleged incident happened during the early hours of Sunday morning at the Lisburn Road.

Detectives from the PSNI’s Rape Crime Unit are appealing for information following the report of the incident and want to hear from anyone who can assist them.

Strangford MP Jim Shannon has appealed to anyone who can help detectives with their enquiries to contact them.

“Such incidents are reprehensible and my thoughts are with this young girl and her family at this time,” he continued.

“People who engage in this kind of despicable behaviour need to be taken off the streets. I hope police will be able to track down those responsible.”

Mr. Shannon said it’s critical members of the public who know anything about the incident come forward now.

Ballynahinch councillor Walter Lyons said he is concerned at what happened and the fact that two people allegedly responsible are still at large.

“I would appeal to anyone who can assist police with their enquiries to do so without hesitation,” he added.

Anyone who can help detectives with their enquiries is asked to contact police on 0845 600 8000 or use the confidential Crimestoppers number 0800 555111.
