Awards for St Malachy’s High School students

10 July 2024

YEAR 10 Learning Support students at Malachy’s High School in Castlewellan have proudly completed the John Muir Discovery Award from September to June.

This prestigious award celebrates their hard work, dedication, and newfound appreciation for the natural world.

The John Muir Award is a programme that encourages people to connect with, enjoy, and care for wild places.

Named after the famous naturalist John Muir, the award helps participants discover, explore, conserve, and share their experiences of nature.

It's a hands-on way to learn about the environment and understand the importance of preserving it for future generations.

St Malachy’s students embarked on various outdoor adventures and conservation projects as part of the ‘Re-rooting our Past in the Future: Castlewellan Historic Demesne Heritage Outreach Programme’.

They explored local parks, cleaned up natural spaces, and learned about local wildlife. These activities not only helped the environment but also allowed students to develop crucial social skills.

One student said: "I never knew how much fun it could be to work with nature. I learned how to work better with others and improve friendships.

Another student commented on the role of the biodiversity officer, Amy Dixon.

”Amy made learning interesting, relevant, and fun. She was an amazing person to teach us week by week in all weathers.”

Through the John Muir Award, students gain teamwork, communication, and problem-solving skills. They learn to respect the environment and each other, building confidence and a sense of accomplishment.

Mr K Faloon, head of the Learning Support Centre at St. Malachy’s, said: ”Seeing the students grow socially and personally has been incredible.

“They have shown great teamwork and have learned valuable life skills that will benefit them in the future.”

St Malachy’s High School wishes to Newry, Mourne and Down District Counci  and the National Lottery Heritage Fund for funding this project.

A spokesperson for the school said: “Their support for the ‘Re-rooting our Past in the Future: Castlewellan Historic Demesne Heritage Outreach Programme’ has made this enriching experience possible.

“Congratulations to our Year 10 Learning Support students for their hard-earned achievement.

“The John Muir Discovery Award has not only enriched their understanding of nature but has also played a significant role in their social development.

“This experience has prepared them well for the challenges ahead, both in and out of the classroom.”
