VOLUNTEERS from Portaferry Action Cancer recently raised over £16,000.

The money was raised for Action Cancer Northern Ireland and will go towards treatments and research to combat various cancer diagnosis.

Ellen Allen, who has been at the helm of the Portaferry Action Cancer shop since it opened, said: “This shop has been a mainstay within the Portaferry community for the last 14 years and has always been generously supported by the town.

“Without them and all of our visitors, we would never have been able to raise the amount of money that we have done, over they years.”

Ellen added: “We are determined that in the next 12 months, our fundraising total will reach, if not exceed, the £300,000 mark.”

Gareth Kirk, chief executive of Action Cancer said: “It’s hard to believe that in the years that the Action Cancer shop has been open in Portaferry, it would raise well over a quarter of a million pounds.

“This is completely the result of Ellen Allen, her many years of dedication to the charity and all the volunteers who give their time.

“Ellen is the face of the shop and because of her the place is more than just a shop. It is a community hub for many local people.”

He added: “We couldn’t provide our support services without people like Ellen and all of the shop volunteers. We are extremely grateful for every minute they spend keeping the shop open and raising much needed funds for Action Cancer.”
