Walker braves the shave for Sophie’s fundraiser

8 January 2020

A LOCAL politician is having his head shaved next month to help a Ballynahinch schoolgirl’s fundraising initiative on behalf of the Guide Dogs for the Blind Association.

Rowallane councillor Billy Walker will have his locks shaved off by 14 year-old Sophie Mills, who is a student at Ballynahinch High School.

Sophie has been diagnosed with Albinism and is on the waiting list for a guide dog. She has previously been cane-trained by representatives from the charity and is hoping she can get a guide dog soon.

Sophie is currently selling raffle tickets for a host of prizes ahead of a a key fundraising event in

Ballynahinch Masonic Hall on February 1.

Sophie — who recently finished in the top six of a SuperValu Superstars competition –  is keen to help the Guide Dogs charity by raising money on its behalf. She was motivated to help after discovering that it costs £50,000 to train a guide dog.

Cllr Walker, who is no stranger to fundraising for worthy causes, is delighted he will be able to help Sophie support a charity which does not receive any government funding.

“I am more than happy to have my head shaved to raise money for Sophie, even though we are still in the depths of winter,” he joked.

“I hope to raise as much as I can and if anyone would like to support me they can contact me via my mobile or social media page. Sophie is on the waiting list for a guide dog and I so hope that she will get one this year.”

Cllr Walker, who met up with Sophie and her parents yesterday, is encouraging people to give generously and explained that he will be printing a number of sponsor sheets so people will be able to donate.

“I have now met Sophie several times and she is very inspirational. My fundraising target is £500 and I hope that I will be able to achieve that,” he added.

Sophie’s fundraising event in Ballynahinch Masonic Hall on February 1 featuring live music gets underway at 7.30pm, with the entry fee £5.

The winners of various raffle prizes will be drawn on the night and Sophie hopes the evening will be a great success.
