THE funeral has taken place of Cabra man Jonathan Gribben who died as the result of a car accident last Friday.
The one-vehicle collision involving a Mitsubishi Shogun happened on the Castlewellan Road near Kilcoo in the early hours.
Mr Gribben, who was a passenger in the car, was taken to hospital but later passed away, while the driver of the vehicle was also admitted for treatment.
The son of Eamon and Majella Gribben and brother of Declan, Mr Gribben’s funeral service was held at St Mary’s Church in Cabra yesterday, with interment in the adjoining cemetery.
Newry, Mourne and Down Council chairwoman Cathy Mason has extended her condolences to the Gribben family and hopes that the injured driver makes a full recovery.
She said the community had been “shocked and saddened” by the tragedy and that her thoughts and sympathies were with Mr Gribben’s family, friends and loved ones.
Clonduff GAC said it was “deeply shocked and saddened” at the untimely death of its former youth player.
The club said on Facebook: “To his heartbroken parents Eamon and Majella, his beloved brother Declan, the entire family circle and his many friends, we extend our sincerest sympathy.”
Police investigating the accident have appealed for anyone who can assist them with their enquiries to come forward.
They are particularly keen to hear from anyone who may have been in the Castlewellan Road area at the time of the crash, or may have any dashcam footage.
A police spokesman said officers attended the scene of the accident along with colleagues from other emergency services and that while the male passenger was taken to hospital, he sadly died later.
