MOTOR fans are revving with excitement after confirmation that Downpatrick is to host a stage of next year’s Ulster Rally.
The event will start and finish outside the St Patrick Centre over the weekend of July 24 and 25.
The Ulster Rally – a fixture of Northern Ireland sporting calendar — will celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2026, with the event regularly attracting the very best drivers from around the world to take to Northern Irish lanes.
And now the local rally takes its place among other popular European events, with the inclusion on the FIA calendar, further underlining its growing stature on the international stage.
Confirmation the cream of rally talent will be in Downpatrick next summer came at last week’s meeting of Newry, Mourne and Down Council’s Strategy, Policy and Resources Committee.
Downpatrick councillor, Oonagh Hanlon, described news of the rally coming to the town as “fantastic”.
She said the flagship motorsport event, organised by Ballynahinch & District Motor Club, will showcase the historic district’s unique character while positioning Downpatrick as a premier destination for motorsport enthusiasts and visitors from across the island and beyond.
The Ulster Rally is a qualifying round of the Northern Ireland Rally Championship and competitive rally stages will be set on closed public roads in and around Downpatrick.
Cllr Hanlon said the rally will be supported by a range of family-friendly activities, static displays and festival-style attractions, designed to bring the community together and create a vibrant sporting atmosphere.
“Event organisers will work closely with local residents, businesses and statutory agencies to ensure the safe and successful delivery of the rally, in full compliance with Motorsport UK regulations,” she explained.
“The start and finish will be based adjacent to the St Patrick’s Centre, with a central rally service area located in the town centre to attract visitors and increase local footfall.”
Cllr Hanlon said it’s expected up to 100 rally teams and crews, along with spectators, media, and volunteers, will be descending on the town.
“This event has the potential to deliver a significant boost to the local economy, benefitting hospitality, retail, and accommodation providers,” she said.
