Textile exhibition opens at arts centre

6 August 2025

AN exhibition featuring traditional textile crafts has opened at Down Arts Centre in Downpatrick.

A total of 31 exquisitely-made pieces are on view during the Lakeside Stitchers exhibition, which runs until Friday, August 29, as part of Craft Month at the arts centre.

Founded in the mid-1980s, the Lakeside Stitchers meet weekly at Hollymount Church Hall outside Downpatrick where they share their passion for quilting, embroidery, knitting, crochet, and lace making.

With a dozen dedicated members — ranging from skilled veterans to enthusiastic beginners — the group places a strong emphasis on learning, sharing, and keeping traditional textile crafts alive.

Following the enthusiastic response to a recent exhibition held in conjunction with local Harvest celebrations, the Stitchers are excited to share their creative work with a wider audience.

Their Down Arts Centre display features a beautiful variety of hand-crafted pieces that reflect both individual talent and collective effort.

“We’re not just keeping heritage skills alive — we’re building community, sharing stories, and making new friendships along the way,” said a group spokesperson.

The exhibition is not only a chance for the public to appreciate the artistry of

handmade textile work, but also a warm invitation to anyone interested in joining the group.

Whether you’re a seasoned stitcher or just curious, the Lakeside Stitchers welcome all who would like to learn, create, and enjoy some good craic.

Don’t miss this opportunity to see the vibrant work of local crafters and perhaps be inspired to pick up a needle and thread yourself.

The exhibition is open from 10.30am to 4.30pm, Monday to Friday, and admission is free.
