SHIMNA SHARKS won the Newcastle Lions Challenge Cup at Shimna Integrated College last week.
Both games were a credit to the four teams taking part , and proved that the athletes of Shimna Stars Special Olympic Squad take their basketball very serious. Both matches lasted the full twenty minutes.
In the first game, Bryansford Ladies GAC lost 14-10 to Shimna Stars Ladies’ team.
The game was fast and Bryansford worked hard to try and keep a Stars team that had a full squad to change about, so that everyone had a chance to play.
In the second game the pupils of Shimna Integrated college who play for Shimna Sharks, were a credit to their school as they faced the full squad of Shimna Stars.
In the first quarter it was obvious that this game was not for the faint hearted as both teams scored points quickly .
At the end of the first quarter Shimna Stars changed their squad and a fresh group faced the Sharks. By the fourth quarter one wondered how the Sharks had any energy to keep running. In the end the Sharks took the trophy winning 23-20.
Newcastle Lions would like to thank the referees and the Knights of Malta for their services. If you would like to volunteer to help Shimna Stars, they meet each Tuesday evening at 7pm in the sports hall at Shimna Integrated College.
