A NEWCASTLE councillor has welcomed steps being taken to improve fire safety close to a housing estate in the town.

Sinn Féin’s Willie Clarke has said that Apex Housing Association has successfully established a fire break close to homes at the Burrendale estate.

Cllr Clarke said the work was carried out after residents have raised concerns about the proximity of gorse bushes to their oil tanks.

“The presence of these flammable shrubs posed a potential risk, as they could ignite and endanger both homes and lives,” Cllr Clarke said.

“I am deeply grateful for the cooperation and commitment shown by the APEX team.

“Their swift action in response to the community’s concern is commendable. The successful completion of the works has ensured the safety of residents.”
