A LOCAL politician has called for what he described as “clarity” around ongoing roadworks on the Shimna Road in Newcastle.
SDLP MLA Colin McGrath says the work has resulted in a lane closure near the junction with Shimna Vale.
Mr McGrath has written to the Department for Infrastructure requesting an update on the timeline for the works, amid what he says are concerns from local residents and visitors about mounting traffic congestion during the busy summer period.
“The Shimna Road is one of the key routes through Newcastle and the closure of a lane, particularly at this time of year, is causing understandable concern,” he said.
“I understand that the closure relates to urgent repair work following a collapse on the road, and of course public safety must always come first. But people are entitled to know how long these works are likely to take.”
He continued: “With holidaymakers, day-trippers and locals all relying on this stretch of road, congestion is already building and is likely to worsen.
“We need clear communication from the Department so that people can plan accordingly, and so that we can be assured that the works are being prioritised and will be completed as quickly as possible.”
Mr McGrath added: “I have asked the Department to provide an update on the expected completion date for the repairs, and to outline what steps are being taken to minimise disruption in the meantime.
“I’ll continue to press for answers and keep the local community informed.”
