DUNDRUM hosted the Armagh/Down Association Lambeg drum competition at the weekend.
Slieve Croob councillor Alan Lewis, who attended the event, congratulated the winners, including Kai Sterritt, who picked up the Bickerstaff Cup for Juniors, with overall first place going to Daniel Hawthorn, who lifted the Caledon Cup in memory of Constable David Sterritt.
Cllr Lewis said he was interested in the skill and musical talent demonstrated by those who took their turn to drum which, he admitted, was “far beyond his capabilities” but something which came naturally to those professionals who took part.
“Young and old were able to ensure that the rhythm of the drums echoed around Dundrum with relative ease and I’m told it looks easier than it was,” continued Cllr Lewis.
“The Lambeg drum is a traditional instrument which is unique to Northern Ireland, with players learning their craft with many hours’ of determined and focused practice.”
The Slieve Croob politician said the judges had an “expert ear for perfection, ensuring that winners were recognised and rewarded rewarded”.
He also thanked Dundrum Orange Lodge for hosting the event which was graced by superb summer sun.
“There was a great turn out along with fantastic weather which made for a family friendly event enjoyed by all,” Cllr Lewis added.
