ONE of the Downe Hospital’s longest serving nurses has retired after 40 years of dedicated service.

Theresa Malone’s remarkable nursing journey began in 1981 as a healthcare assistant at Ards Hospital and, over the years, her commitment and passion for patient care has made a lasting impact on many.

Theresa’s career has seen her play pivotal roles at both the Ards, Bangor and the Downe Hospitals.

She has provided outstanding care to patients across various departments, including care of the elderly and medicine in Downpatrick.

For the past 20 years, Theresa has been a valued member of the nursing team in the outpatients department at the Downe where her expertise, compassion and dedication have been deeply valued by colleagues and patients.

One of Theresa’s achievements was her involvement in the UVB Award presented by the Northern Ireland Healthcare Awards to the Downe Hospital Team last year.

The award was for the positive outcomes that have been recorded and the difference UVB treatment is making to the lives of patients who attend the service, with the recognition underscoring Theresa’s commitment to excellence in patient care.

Reflecting on her career, Theresa said she really enjoyed working in the Downe Hospital with all the patients and staff.  

“I will miss them greatly,” she said.

“I am looking forward to my retirement and spending time with my family and enjoying a few holidays.  I am always open to helping out with a few bank shifts if needed.”

Thanking Theresa for her many years of dedication and commitment, Sister Hazel Bartley described her as an invaluable member of the team, always going above and beyond to provide the best care for patients. 

“Her retirement is well-deserved and we wish her all the best in her retirement,” added Sister Bradley.

Theresa’s retirement marks the end of an era for the Downe Hospital will her warmth, professionalism and unwavering dedication to nursing will be missed by her colleagues and patients.

As Theresa embarks on this new chapter, she leaves behind a legacy of compassion and excellence that will continue to inspire future generations of Nurses for many years to come.
