Portaferry exile Jonny releases single from Oz

14 July 2021

A MUSICIAN from Portaferry who is now living in Australia is to release a first single from his debut album, Another Life.

Jonny Reid — who worked as a luthier at Lowden Guitars in Downpatrick for six years — will release the title track of the album on July 23.

The 31 year-old has been living and working as a full-time musician in Perth for the last nine years.

While he has not been home since before the global pandemic started, Jonny has had help from his home town.

“I recorded my album here in Australia at Scudley Records in Perth and also with the help from home from Portaferry multi-instrumentalist and country star Stephen Smyth in his Loughside Recording Studios who we sent tracks back and forward to so he could add his magic,” said Jonny.

“There’s songs on the new album about travel and experiences from Ireland to Australia. Songs about love and wicked exes. There’s even a song about killing a barman.”

Jonny is no stranger to a big stage, having previously opened for international acts such as Richie Sambora from Bon Jovi and country music legend, Nancy Griffiths Reid.

Speaking about the single, he explained: “I created the idea of a longing for someone and how you can’t be together but maybe in Another Life you could have been.

“The song opens with how some people cold view city life and the big lights. Many would say it’s beautiful but I prefer the country nights. Being from a small seaside village, the countryside was all I had known as a boy.”

Regarded as sitting somewhere before Bruce Springsteen and Ed Sheeran in style, Jonny left Co Down in 2015 initially to play music on a one-year working holiday.

He has now set down roots by getting engaged to a woman from Co Waterford who he met in Australia.

However, home is still very close to his heart.

“My mum and dad moved from Portaferry to Cloughey a few years ago and I normally visit every year for three to four weeks,” sad Jonny. “Unfortunately I haven’t been able to travel back home to see my family with the current virus we have all be dealing with. I’ll be back as soon as I can to see everyone.”
