Newcastle harbour safety concerns

AHEAD of the launch of the new boating season, an appeal has been issued for vital safety work to be carried out at Newcastle harbour.

The appeal to Newry, Mourne and Down Council has been made by local councillor Willie Clarke who said work is required at the north pier.

Expressing “serious concern” about the potential for accidents, including the risk of individuals falling into the water, Cllr Clarke said he hopes the work will be expedited.

He said residents’ safety is paramount and warned there must be no delays as they could lead to a tragedy.

Cllr Clarke said he has been assured that moorings will be checked for corrosion and damage.

“This is a crucial step in ensuring the safety and integrity of the harbour facilities,” he said.

“The council needs to be committed to maintaining the highest safety standards at the harbour and I’m urging all relevant parties to expedite these works to ensure everyone’s safety.”

Cllr Clarke confirmed he has written to the Rivers Agency, requesting work to be carried out on the banks of the Tullybrannigan River in Newcastle.

He work is needed to stabilise the banks and remove overgrown vegetation to prevent potential erosion.

“There is a real risk that the banks will erode, block the bridge, and cause flooding in the Tullybrannigan area,” Cllr Clarke suggested.

“Given the number of recent storms and the increase in rainfall, this maintenance work needs to be implemented as quickly as possible. The Tullybrannigan River is a vital waterway in Newcastle and  is crucial to the local ecosystem and the community.

Cllr Clarke said maintaining the waterway’s health and stability is of utmost importance.

Emphasising the urgency of the situation and potential for significant damage and disruption if the works are not carried out promptly, the Mournes councillor said there is no time to waste.

He added: “I’m urging the Rivers Agency to act swiftly to prevent a potential disaster in our community.”
