THE reopening of the Mass Pad at Newcastle’s King Street has been welcomed by local councillor Willie Clarke.
The pathway — which leads to the Mass Rock located in a garden in the area – had become overgrown and was inaccessible for the public, resulting in its closure for 30 years. But it has now reopened.
Cllr Clarke described the path and associated Mass Rock as an “interesting and subtle historical reminder” of Penal times, from around 1693 until 1829 in Ireland when Catholics and other non ‘established’ religions were not permitted to practice their religion under Penal Laws.
As a result, he revealed that mass was often said in secluded outdoor locations, such as King Street.
“This simple feature is a significant symbol and reminder of the repression of the Irish Catholics during the Penal Laws in the 18th century,” said Cllr Clarke.
He added: “It is also an interesting addition to the heritage of the area and Sinn Féin members, along with local residents, decided to make the site more accessible to provide a historic amenity for the local population and visitors.”
