THE replacement of benches at Inch Abbey, outside Downpatrick, has been welcomed by local MLA Colin McGrath
The SDLP politician contacted the Department of Communities Historic Environment Division after learning that a bench had been removed from the site.
He said: “Inch Abbey is one of our most beautiful historic sites. In the last year it has really taken on new life as a location where many people will journey to for walking or waling their dog.
“This has allowed people to meet up in the open air and where they can do so in a socially distanced way.
“I was concerned when I had heard that recently a bench had been removed from the site and no announcement had been made by the Historic Environment Division yet as to when it would be replaced.
“I was happy to make representation to the HED to enquire as to the status of this and am delighted to say that they have confirmed to me that this is bench is currently being replaced as it had simply reached the end of its lifespan.”
Mr McGrath continued: “This is great news and as we enter the springtime will be of tremendous benefit to all those who make use of this beautiful historic site.
“I am sure there are many people who have enjoyed bringing a flask of tea and a bite to eat here that will be delighted to know that this bench is set to be replaced.
He added: “In the grand scheme of things amidst Covid and protocols news of a bench replacement may seem trivial to some, but it is in these small but very meaningful ways that we build up community and give people the lift they so need and deserve after what has been an immensely difficult two years.”
