Mountain team rescues walker

Mountain team rescues walker

4 December 2024

VOLUNTEERS from the Mourne Mountain Rescue Team went to the assistance of a walker who fell while descending Slieve Binnian on Sunday afternoon.

The alarm was raised shortly after 2.15pm with the walker sustained a serious leg injury high up the mountain.

The person was also suffering from mild exposure.

Given the walker’s location, the rescue team decided to evacuate the casualty by stretcher back uphill to the old Binnian quarries where team vehicles could access.

After a short transfer to road access, the casualty was prepped for onward transfer to hospital.

Sixteen members who responded to the emergency call were stood down shortly before 6.20pm.

Sunday’s incident has prompted the rescue team to appeal to anyone who finds themselves in need of assistance in the mountains to always dial 999 and ask for the police or mountain rescue.

The rescue team said when the initial 999 call is complete “it’s absolutely essential” to keep your phone free so that a rescue coordinator can call you back to confirm/expand on information.
