Marina get one over on reigning champions Spa

1 November 2023

MARINA..................5.5 (43)

SPA GC.....................2.5 (32)

WHAT a turnaround in fortune for the players of Marina this week as they put their bad start to the season behind them with this good win against the reigning champions Spa.

This is the second defeat of the season for Spa which in past seasons would nearly of been unheard off but we can expect them to come back fighting again.

Graham Christie and his rink took the first win of the match with a 7-5 win over Norman Gordon.

The home rink of Patricia Russell, Anne McConnell, Joey Chambers and Jim McConnell won six of the seven ends against Adam Gilmour to run out 10-2 winners.

On the next run Billy Collom and Peter Christie shared the point with a 5-5 draw with Peter only winning two ends so Billy will be disappointed not to hold on for the win.

He made up for this in his next game as he led his

rink of Isobel Cunningham, Henry McDowell and James Wilson to a good 12-3 win over Francis McCann, Cyril Cromie, Derek McCann and Adam Gilmour.

Jim McConnell finished off a great night when he scored a count of three on the last end to secure a 7-6 win over Graham Christie.

SEAFORDE YFC.......5.5 (43)

BRIGHT....................2.5 (35)

SEAFORDE got back to winning ways after the last two defeats with this visit of Bright.

The first two games were shared with a home win for Paddy Burns of 6-4 against Liam Sharvin while Niall Polly had a 9-6 win over Hugh Burns.

The visitors got the better of the next games with Lorna Stevenson and Marc Crothers playing out a 7-7 draw while Niall Polly and his rink of Bobby Cusack, Andy Campbell and Sid Stevenson scored steadily for a 10-7 win against the Crothers rink.

With the possibility of the home side losing another match on the cards, they finally dug deep and produced the goods on the last run of games.

Joy Perry, Alan Telford, Kirsty and Paddy Burns finished with a 9-2 win over Lorna Stevenson and the rink of Joe Kennedy, Liz Herron, John Ruddell and Hugh Burns had an 8-3 win against Liam Sharvin.

These two wins done enough for Seaforde to secure the overall and claim the extra two points.

ST MICHAEL’S...........0 (20)

ST MARY’S.................8 (43)

THIS result may have the look that St Mary’s had total control of the match but this wasn’t the case as the home side deserved at least a couple of points as they made life very difficult for the visitors with a few of the games only decided on the last end.

The wins started with Ricky Cathcart and Neil Brown having 7-5 wins

over Gary Glavin and Pam Trohear while Meghan McCabe had an 8-2 win over Eugene Morgan.

In the second half, all rinks doubled up and the best was Ricky Cathcart along with Donna Raybould, Terry Quinn and Kieran McMullan with an 8-1 win to finish off the match.

This result now puts St Mary’s on top of the table and they will be hoping their good run continues.

St Michael’s can take a lot of positives as they put in a good performance and were just unlucky on the night.
