NEWRY, Mourne and Down is one of the areas with the greatest need for special educational needs provision and support, a local politician has revealed.

South Down MLA Cathy Mason said she’s “greatly concerned” that the council area is one of three locations which has the greatest need for placements for the new term beginning in September.

She sad over 100 vulnerable children and their families are still waiting for confirmation of a school place.

“”It is clear that special educational needs provision requires a new and caring approach with effective solutions,” said Mrs Mason, who is a member of Stormont’s Education Committee.

“Sinn Féin have called on the Education Minister as well as the Education Authority to intervene and ensure that every child has a suitable placement and that schools are properly resourced and supported to meet every child’s need.”

The Assemblywoman said her party will continue to stand up and make the case for a system that “delivers for all children” and ensure that every child has the opportunity to learn and thrive in a setting that supports them.
