DOWNPATRICK schoolgirl Lucy English is a real ‘sweet’ heart when it comes to making cupcakes.

The 13 year-old raised £645 for the Alzheimer’s Society last weekend by making and selling 300 cupcakes to friends and neighbours.

The big-hearted teenager funded the purchase of ingredients for the sweet treats by winning the top prize of a £200 grocery shopping voucher in an online competition for the most creative Rainbow of Hope.

Organised by social care company, Lydian Homecare, Lucy’s large rainbow of hope display, made up from used milk cartons which were then painted, was deemed to be the best entry from Northern Ireland.

Lucy, who attends St Mary’s High School in the town, said cupcake baking was her speciality.

“I’ve been baking cupcakes for years,” said Lucy. “I love baking and I love making cupcakes so when I saw that the Alzheimer’s Cupcake Day was coming up, I thought I would try to sell my cakes for charity for the first time.

“I made 12 different flavours which were sold for £1.50 each, but some people were very generous with their donations.”
