LOCAL people were given a glimpse of plans for a skate park and pump track in Downpatrick last week.
Down Leisure Centre was the venue for two interactive workshops to look at designs for the £415,000 project, which is due to open next year.
Newry, Mourne and Down Council chairperson, Cllr Pete Byrne said afterwards: “This was a positive session at Down Leisure Centre exploring different scenarios and layouts for the skate park and pump track.
“The input from a wide range of ages, including those involved in urban sports was very much valued. The Dunleath Skate Park Project, due to be delivered by March 2025, will be an exciting facility for bike and skateboard users as well as local families.”
Jeremy Donaldson, an architect at Curve Studio, which is involved in the project, said: “The objective of the meetings was to clarify the community’s needs, preferences and ambitions for the new facility.
“The meetings were attended by local young people, parents, councillors, and skaters and riders of all ages.
“Alongside local people, representatives for the national sporting bodies shared their experience, adding regional perspective and insight.
“Curve presented three alternative design scenarios for the new development. Each scenario was used to highlight a range of technical, functional and social issues.”
Mr Donaldson added: “Everyone at the meeting got the opportunity to write down their thoughts on the design scenarios before coming together in discussion groups to work on their top priorities.
“These included space for young ones and novices, a progressive and fun learning environment for bikes and boards, and a beautiful environment with wildflowers and seating.
“With a broad consensus achieved, Curve Studio are ready to develop final proposals with the council and project lead, Gleeds.”
