Lions Club thanks firefighters after Mournes wildfires

23 April 2025

MEMBERS of Newcastle Lions Club paid a visit to the town’s fire station recently to thank firefighters for their work in tackling the recent wildfires in the Mournes.

Lions vice district governor Marian McGreevy and fellow Newcastle Lions presented a box of essential supplies including, chocolate bars, water, crisps and fizzy drinks valued at £150 to help keep the crew’s energy levels up when fighting a fires.

Following a very successful street collection on April 12 when over £550 was raised, Newcastle Lions are preparing for their next event on Saturday, May 10 between 10am and 4pm when their annual recycling collection takes place.

Members will once again be collecting goods no longer required including old or good tools, sewing machines, both electrical and manual and adult bicycles.

This year’s off point will be in the grounds of the Newcastle Community Cinema.

The Lions will also take donations of spectacles and in promoting, recycle and reuse, they are reducing material that normally would go to landfill. Instead, it’s being reused to help people in need.
