Lions Club focusing on old spectacles

29 March 2023

A NUMBER of local opticians are doing their bit to help Newcastle Lions Club collect old glasses which are repaired and recycled and sent to those in need across the globe.

As part of the drive to encourage people not to dump old spectacles they no longer need, Newcastle Lions are now providing bins in local opticians and some in Belfast so people can donate glasses.

A contact number for the club is provided and the bins are emptied on a regular basis, with the glasses sent by Newcastle Lions to Lions Medico France where they are cleaned and distributed around the world to people in need.

Newcastle Lions recently joined the Northern Ireland Resource Network which was set up to encourage people, groups and organisations to generate less waste.

In addition, the Lions Club is continuing its efforts to attract new members and while hoping new people will bring fresh ideas, they still have to do the regular things as part of their service activities, by providing a lifesaving service of managing and maintaining 10 defibrillators.

At Easter, club members will return to Base Coffee in the resort for a defibrillator maintenance fund collection which was aborted last month in favour of an emergency collection in aid of those impacted by the earthquake in Turkey.

As part of the forthcoming collection, club members will take names of those who would like to have  CPR/Defibrillator awareness training which, it is hoped, will take place at the end of May in Newcastle.

Anyone who has an hour to spend each month and would be keen to join Newcastle Lions to help the local community and the environment is asked to contact 07725 725932 or speak to a club member over the Easter weekend at Base Coffee.
