Libraries NI invites kids to get reading

17 July 2019

PARENTS who are keen for their children to keep up reading over the summer school break should take note of this year’s Big Summer Read.

The annual reading initiative is a free programme which encourages children and teens to continue reading throughout the summer months.

Libraries NI is inviting children aged 15 and under to sign up to the Big Summer Read by calling into any of the public or mobile libraries across Northern Ireland.

The first local session kicks off with a summer reading club starting at Castlewellan Library today at 3pm. On Friday in Downpatrick Library, there’s a Big Summer Read Lego session at 2pm and again at the same time on Monday. At Comber Library there’s a Storytime and Craft session on the same day at 3pm.

Also on Monday there will be Storytime and Craft at Ballynahinch Library for children aged 4-8 at 3pm finishing with a Fun with The Dogs Trust event next Wednesday, also at 3pm.

A reading chart and record card will be given to every child on their first visit to the library during July and August.

Throughout the summer, children are invited to read as many books as possible recording each book on their reading chart. At the end of the summer, participants will receive a special certificate in recognition of their reading achievement.

For more information on the Big Summer Read, details of free events and activities taking place in your local library and how you can sign up today, call into your nearest library or go to the Libraries NI website www.librariesni.org.uk.
