Lewis ‘shocked, but not surprised’ at repeated dumping

ONE of the district’s beauty spots is falling prey to illegal dumpers.

The area around Spa Lake, near Ballynahinch, has been the site of repeated instances of dumping recently.

Last week a discarded settee and rubbish was found in the area.

The latest incident has been condemned by local councillor Alan Lewis, who says the dumpers are showing “two fingers” to the community.

Cllr Lewis said the incident occurred last Friday, ironically just hours after he had launched a Neighbourhood Watch scheme in the Spa area.

“I was absolutely astounded to receive photos of this dumping; it occurred in broad daylight, literally hours after I left the area,” he said.

“I’m shocked though, unfortunately, not surprised. This wilful dumping reflects a serious discourtesy and unbelievable laziness.

“This is another in a long list of incidents at Spa Lake. Just last week our team removed tyres and a washing machine.

“The week before I had organised a litter-pick and residents removed a car bumper and bags of rubbish.

“It’s unacceptable, beneath contempt. Those responsible are burdens to society and an embarrassment to the community.”

He continued: “I often wonder at the type of person who would care so less about the countryside and community they live in to dump on the side of the road. Their actions reflect their intelligence and lack of belonging within the area.”

Cllr Lewis says he has received dash cam which, he believes, may track down the culprits.

“The wannabe film stars can expect a knock on the door from our council enforcement team,” he continued.

“There is simply no excuse, absolutely none. Those who do this need fined. We should work toward increasing those fines, ensuring that the punishment matches the offence.

“The time and energy that it takes council staff clearing this up is staggering. Our staff simply have better things to be at that clearing up after laziness and stupidity.

“The household recycling centres are open six days a week. There is one a few miles down the road in Ballynahinch. Those responsible should educate themselves it would have saved them the bother of fly-tipping.”

“Neighbourhood services should also look at permitting vans to enter or HRCs, I accept the rule prevents commercial use. However, there is a danger we are penalising residents who would dispose responsibility while facilitating an excuse for those who don’t.”

Cllr Lewis added: “I fear my work in highlighting these through the pages of our local press facilitates oxygen to these morons, but I believe councillors have a duty to call it out, while continuing to lobby for suitable and stringent fines.”
