PATRICK Kielty will have a familiar face behind the cameras when he takes over The Late Late Show in September
Killyleagh man Stephen Stewart, who has worked extensively with the Dundrum comedian over the years, has been appointed co-director of RTE’s flagship entertainment programme.
And the chances are that Stewart – widely admired and respected in the television industry – will help bring a fresh new look to the world’s longest running chat show.
“Patrick and I have worked together for over 20 years so I was really chuffed for him when he told me that he had got the gig on the Late Late,” he said.
“It is a truly iconic TV show and I know how much it means to him.”
Stephen was the director of the Patrick Kielty Almost Live chat show which aired on BBC Northern Ireland between 1999 and 2003.
He also produces the popular UTV series Keepers of the Lough, which is narrated by Patrick.
Emmy winner Stephen has worked with Chris Evans on Channel 4 shows TFI Friday and Don’t Forget Your Toothbrush.
He also has US experience on late night shows including Jimmy Kimmel Live, and was previously involved with Ireland’s Got Talent.
He is looking forward to be reunited with Patrick and working on the Late Late Show.
“We work together as often as we can, so when I was asked by RTÉ to direct the live studio it was too good to miss,” he continued.
“It’s not often that a show as big as this gets to re-launch, so with a new host and a new era will come a new set and a new look. It’s been 14 years since the role of host last changed hands, so it’s going to be a very exciting time.
“I know most of the talented production staff and crew in the RTE building as my own TV company Green Inc makes lots of series for RTE and has done for over 20 years so I always enjoy working with them. We’re already working hard to get things ready.
“Paddy and I have also been working together more recently as he is the voice of our hit UTV series about the amazing people of Strangford Lough, The Keepers of the Lough.
We’re both proud County Down men so Keepers is a true passion project for both of us.”
Stephen says he has heard “nothing but goodwill” for Patrick since it was announced he would be taking over the Late Late Show.
“He is a gifted, funny and very smart presenter so I can’t wait to be there on the night in the TV gallery behind the scenes as he walks out in front of the studio audience and whole of the country for the first time. It will be electric.”
