Kind-hearted Rory raises hundreds for victims of Newcastle flooding

OVER £1,400 was recently donated to help the victims of flooding from Storm Francis over the summer.

Hundreds of homes and premises were ruined by flash flooding in the Bryansford and Shimna Road areas on August 25.

The appeal was started by local man Rory Brownfoot who thanked people for their support.

His statement on The Local Facebook page said: “I just want to say a massive thank you to everyone who pitched in and also those that helped on the ground with the clean-up.

“After a meeting with Cllr Willie Clarke, we agreed that we should help a few in need so that the money wouldn’t be spread too thinly.

“Some of the kids in those families have certain needs and lost absolutely everything so

I can only hope that the vouchers will have brightened their day.”

Mr Brownfoot found out the Newcastle-based Autism Initiatives lost supplies and equipment and decided to support the charity.

“Autism is something that’s close to my heart and I was so pleased to be able to help them with a cash donation,” he said. “It went directly to the Newcastle branch. This means the money will be set aside for Newcastle and only Newcastle.

“I personally have seen the damage these floods have caused. Peoples lives turned upside down. Houses left as empty shells. Those people have been overwhelmed by the generosity shown by Newcastle’s population.

“So again, I just want to express my gratitude to those that helped those families during and after the flooding.”
