HAVING received a haircut in the summer, a seven year-old girl from Downpatrick decided to donate her hair to the Little Princess Trust.
Owing to the weather, the summer months offered very little for children to enjoy their time off school.
Left with only her imagination and an enthusiasm that only a seven year-old can enjoy, Morgan-Rose Curran asked her parents if she could get her hair cut.
Her hair was 15 inches in length and went down to just below her waist.
Morgan-Rose’s mum, Paulamarie, explained: “She came into the living room one day and just out of the blue she asked if she could get a haircut.
“I was taken aback because she never mentioned anything about getting her hair cut before.
“I said to her she could get it cut but that she could only do if she raised money for a charity.
“She was all excited and we looked at several different charities, but we both liked the idea of donating her hair to the Little Princess Trust.”
The Little Princess Trust is a charity that provides real hair wigs to children and young people up to 24 years, who have lost their own hair through cancer treatments or other conditions.
The cost to make a wig is £700 and the hair is required to be over 13cm in length.
“Morgan-Rose really liked the idea of her hair being used to make a wig,” Paulamarie continued.
“We had a hairdresser come to the house to cut her hair. She was excited – she wasn’t nervous at all.
“She loved it. If anything, I was the one who was a wee bit upset because I loved her long hair, but she was absolutely delighted with it.
“Her hair is now at shoulder level, and she is buzzing that she has a fringe now – she’s the first to have a fringe in her year.”
Morgan-Rose, who is a pupil at St Brigid’s Primary School in Downpatrick, and her family gare grateful to the many people who sponsored her.
“When we reached out to the Trust, they were really thankful that we picked them as our chosen charity and explained how the sponsorship worked,” said Paulamarie.
“We printed off a bunch of sponsorship forms and I put them into two local bars — The Avenue and The Mirabelle.
“The people were so generous, especially one of our regular customers, Tommy Fitzpatrick, who went above and beyond for us.”
Thanks to the generosity, Morgan-Rose received over £700 which will allow her hair to be used to make several wigs.
“The Princess Trust use the hair they receive and see if it matches for other wigs,” Paulamarie explained.
“Morgan-Rose’s hair can be used for a couple of hundred wigs, so it’s amazing that it is going to a really good cause – she’s over the moon that it will be used to help others.”
