SLIEVE Croob councillor Alan Lewis has confirmed improvements are being made to a Spa bus stop following concerns raised by parents and residents.
He said steps are being taken to improve safety, visibility and accessibility at the Dunmore Road bus stop.
“This stop has become increasingly important for our community, particularly for children travelling to and from school,” he said. “Parents have highlighted that as the number of young people using this stop grows, it is essential that the area is safe, well-maintained and clearly visible to both pedestrians and drivers.”
In light of these concerns, Cllr Lewis has worked closely with the Department for Infrastructure (DfI) to arrange for the surrounding area to be trimmed, cleared and maintained.
“Ensuring that the bus stop is easily visible from the road and free from overgrown vegetation or obstructions is a step towards reducing potential hazards,” he said.
In addition to maintenance, Cllr Lewis has submitted a request to the DfI’s network development team for the installation of a hard standing area at the bus stop.
He said this would provide a firm, level surface for passengers to wait on, reducing the risks associated with wet or uneven ground, particularly in poor weather conditions.
Cllr Lewis said a hard standing area would also make the stop more accessible for those with mobility challenges, parents with pushchairs and elderly passengers.
“These improvements are not just practical, they are essential,” Cllr Lewis explained. “A safe, accessible bus stop encourages families to use public transport, reduces congestion and provides peace of mind to parents.”
