Harry is first in cross country

5 March 2025

HARRY McVeigh approached the start line of the Flahavan’s NI Primary School Cross Country final, aiming to claim victory for the second year running.

He made history as a Primary 6 student last year, clinching first place with a commanding seven-second lead and a time of 6 min 4 sec.

The year before, as one of the youngest competitors, he stunned spectators by finishing fifth.

So, it was only natural that all eyes were, once again, fixed on the current three-time Ulster Club Champion, who donned the recognisable green and blue jersey of Bunscoil Bheanna Boirche, Castlewellan, fully aware of the challenge that lay ahead.

After an already standout season, which included winning his third NI and Ulster Club title for Newcastle AC and achieving third-place at the U-12 All-Ireland Cross Country Championships, Harry set his sights on further glory in Mallusk.

The sun beamed down on the City of Belfast Playing Fields and as the early frost melted away, the route was ready.

From the start, Harry surged ahead, setting a strong pace in the first 200m and quickly establishing a commanding lead.

Despite other runners’ attempts to keep pace, Harry settled into his rhythm and created a sizeable gap.

With a clear understanding of his goal, he maintained a relentless pace throughout and knew a historic double was his to lose.

As he ascended the back hill and crossed the top pitches, the lead was virtually insurmountable and with the final bend approaching, second place was almost out of view. Harry’s finish was composed and graceful and he crossed the line in 5 min 49 sec, 19 minutes ahead of his nearest rival and 15 seconds quicker than last year.

True to his character, Harry waited for all his fellow competitors to finish, offering heartfelt congratulations to everyone, from the front-runners to the last participant crossing the line. His sportsmanship, which has earned him a place as a beloved figure in the racing world, was evident as always.

After collecting his medal, he stood tall on the podium, surrounded by the support of his family and knowing that his dedication had led him to this moment.

While savouring his current success, Harry is already looking ahead, focused on what he can accomplish next season.
