Fleadh organisers calling musicians to trad orchestra

21 June 2017

YOUNG musicians are being sought for the first Irish Traditional Orchestra in the Newry, Mourne and Down area.

The initiative has been launched by Newry City Music Festival, Iur Cinn Fleadh, with support of the local council.

The Fleadh organisers want up to 40 young musicians from the Newry, Mourne and Down region to take part. Renowned local fiddle player, performer and teacher, Ursula Byrne will act as musical director.

Initial rehearsals for the new orchestra will be held over the summer months with the inaugural performance scheduled to take place at this year’s Iur Cinn Fleadh, between September 7 and 10.

Applicants must be between 12 and 21 years of age on January 1, 2017.  It is essential that  members can play jigs and reels at a good pace whilst the ability to read music and perform harmonies is desirable.  Preference will be given to older students once a certain standard is reached. The orchestra is open to all instruments including cello, double bass, piano and percussion. For further information relating to musical requirements email ursulabyr@hotmail.com.

Those who believe they meet the criteria are asked to email their name, contact details and a brief background on their musical background to info@newry2020.com.

The closing date for applications is Monday at 5pm  Auditions may be added to the recruitment process and if so they will be held initially in Newry on Saturday, June 24. Further details will be forwarded on receipt of applications.
