VOLUNTEERS from the Mourne Mountain Rescue Team were joined by the Air Ambulance and police when they went to the assistance of a walker who sustained a serious fall within Cove Cave on Saturday afternoon.
The alarm was raised shortly before 2.25pm and given the nature of the walker’s injuries, Air Ambulance support was requested, with paramedics treating the casualty for head, neck and back injuries.
Working in tandem, the various arms of the emergency services immobilised and packaged the casualty before a so-called roped evacuation out of the cave.
Once extracted, the injured walker was carried downhill to the Air Ambulance for onward transfer to hospital.
A total of 15 rescue team members who responded, alongside air ambulance and crew, were stood down just before 6.25pm.
