A TRAFFIC speed indicator device to be installed in Dundrum.
It is expected to be in operation by the middle of next month, but where it will be located has yet to be decided.
Local Ulster Unionist councillor Alan Lewis has welcomed confirmation of the news.
Cllr Lewis is chairman of Newry, Mourne of Down Policing Community and Safety Partnership which has funded the installation of SIDs throughout the district.
He says he has been in contact with the PSNI and the Department for Infrastructure regarding the location of the device.
“I am pleased that this device has now been approved for Dundrum,” he remarked.
“I have been advised that a site meeting will now take place involving local councillors, DFI and PSNI.
“This will determine where on the Newcastle side of the village that the device will be placed.
“I expect this meeting to take place within the next few weeks, with the device itself being placed around mid-June.
Cllr Lewis confirmed that each electoral area within the council boundary now has three SIDs, which he said would help reduce traffic speeds.
“The SIDs are placed in partnership with DFI and PSNI after careful consideration of areas of community concern,” he explained.
“I am conscious that the village has historically long had issues with excess speed, particularly on the Newcastle Road, with vehicles approaching Main Street at speed. I want the SID placed as a matter of urgency, there can be no delay.”
He continued: “The SID devices have been extremely successful. They allow members to analyse data, showing us areas where more work is needed to educate and if necessary fine drivers who continue to flout the law and put our community in danger.
“Some of the speeds which have been recorded on these devices, especially in built-up areas, are scary.
“Those who are comfortable with driving through towns and villages at twice the speed limit have no sense of community, no belonging or respect for their neighbours. I ask for respect for all road users.”
Cllr Lewis added: “As promised, I have delivered traffic calming measures in Dundrum at each end of the village.
“I sincerely hope that this leads to a measured change in the speed of vehicles through the village.”
