Dundrum celebrate

17 October 2012

IT was celebration time at last for Dundrum’s footballers at Pairc Esler on Sunday.

There were jubilant scenes when Paul McComiskey lifted the cup in front of the joyful Dundrum supporters at the Newry venue.

There was no end of season joy for the footballers of Aghaderg as Noel Sexton’s charges played second fiddle to Dundrum throughout.

McComiskey, the former All-Ireland star received the cup from his fellow clubman, county chairman Seamus Walsh.

McComiskey who has opted out of James McCartan’s county squad in the past two seasons after featuring against Cork in the All Ireland final of 2010 proved to be the difference between the two teams, finishing the game with a personal tally of eight points, five of them from frees.

After Kieran Maguire had opened the scoring with an Aghaderg point after ten seconds, points from McComiskey (2) and Kieran Walsh gave the seasiders a lead which they were never again to lose.

Dundrum led 0-7 to 0-01 at the half time break, but it should have been much more

considering were guilty of squandering many chances in the first half.

They continued to dominate the game in the third quarter, adding four unanswered points from McComiskey (2), Walsh and King to extend their lead to ten points.

A point from substitute Chris McAvoy sparked a brief Aghaderg revival which yielded further scores from an impressive Stephen Fitzsimons and Kieran Maguire.

But these scores served only to rouse Dundrum from their slumbers and they added four points without reply to run out winners with nine points to spare.
