DOWNPATRICK got their league campaign back on track with a convincing away win over neighbours Loughinisland on Friday night.

After a run of 5 consecutive defeats the Hoops have been dragged into a relegation battle at the bottom of Division 1.

Downpatrick got off to a fantastic start with an early goal and a couple of points.

By midway through the half they had a 2-6 to 0-1 lead.

A number of goal chances went begging by the visitors as Loughinisland struggled to get the ball out. Eventually Loughinisland started to fight back but still the Hoops had a 2-12 to 0-7 lead at half time.

The strong wind in their favour should have made a difference to the Blues but they still couldn’t cope with the Downpatrick attack.

Another 2 goals for the visitors put them firmly in the driving seat as the game entered the final quarter, the pick of which was a brilliant effort by Oran Cunningham.

A strong defensive performance by the Hoops held Loughinisland back as they struggled to get a foothold in the game.

As the game started to peter out Loughinisland finally found their gear and narrowed the gap from 15 points down to eight. But it was too little too late and a goal in the dying seconds only put a gloss on the scoreboard for them.

Two wins over their rivals will put Downpatrick in good form ahead of their championship match, but Loughinisland will be determined to set the record straight when the sides meet again on August 22.
