Downpatrick hold annual awards night

Downpatrick hold annual awards night

2 November 2022

AFTER a season when it looked like there would be no cricket in Downpatrick, the cricket club held their presentation night last Saturday in Murphy’s Bar and Restaurant.

As usual John Thompson, in his inimitable style, started off proceedings then after a magnificent meal, club captain Jack McIlheron reflected on last season.

He was followed by club captain Charlie Hutton, who gave his thoughts on what happened in the last few months.

It was quite obvious very early that Charlie had not prepared anything, but his off-the-cuff performance was typical of the man and he had the audience captivated with his vision for the club going forward.

Next item on the agenda was the awards for this year.

The ultra consistent Martin Gartland was named bowler of the year.

Charlie himself won fielder of the year but undoubtedly the biggest round of applause was reserved for Gavin Ringland, who collected the batsman of the season trophy.

Paul Linehan was invited up to present the Linehan trophy which went to Charles Hutton.

Unbelievably, Mr Hutton was still not done as the awards kept coming as Charlie and Bryan Perry were each winners of the most ducks each while batting.

There was only one trophy left to be given out and that was player of the year which was won by James Ferguson.

Clubman of the year went to Jeremy McCready,.

Jeff Maguire brought proceedings to a close and his enthusiasm for junior cricket and ladies cricket and also his vision of what Downpatrick could become if they could fulfil their potential, is infectious.

It was so good to see so many junior members and players in attendance.

All in all, a very enjoyable night and optimism is flowing around Downpatrick Cricket Club.

Finally, Downpatrick Cricket Club would like to thank Murphy’s for the lovely night with mouth watering food and impeccable service.
