DOWN Leisure Centre in Downpatrick reopens to the public this Friday.

Newry, Mourne and Down Council has confirmed that a number of its leisure facilities will be back in use as part of the continued easing of lockdown restrictions across the area.

In addition to the leisure complex’s pool reopening, gym users will also be able to return to the Market Street complex as part of the phased reopening of indoor leisure facilities which will be in line with current Covid-19 guidelines.

Members can book gym and swim slots in advance online and on the NMD Be Active app.

In addition, bookings can also be made by telephone on 0330 137 4026 between from the start of this week until tomorrow between 9am and 3pm.

Leisure centre members and users are being asked to keep an eye online at https://www.newrymournedown.org/leisure-facilities and on the local authority’s social media channels for further details.

Ahead of this Friday’s reopening, the organisation wants to reassure returning members that, for their safety, an enhanced cleaning regime will be in place.

There will also be clear visible guidelines about cleanliness and reminders of personal responsibility throughout the facilities.

Council chairwoman Laura Devlin said the local authority was delighted to see the return of some outdoor sports training and welcomes the latest announcement from the Northern Ireland Executive allowing leisure centre doors to reopen once again.

“I know the staff within our leisure centres will do all they can to accommodate as many people as possible while ensuring adherence to government guidance so that everyone can feel as safe as possible,” she said.

“I know many of us have found the most recent lockdown restrictions difficult and will see the reopening of our leisure centres as a really positive step in the recovery of our local community.”
