DoE Permanent Secretary pays visit to Down Business Centre

18 January 2023

A SENIOR  figure from the Department for Economy visited the Down Business Centre recently to learn about its work and the key support it provides across the district.

Permanent secretary Mike Brennan met with met members of the Business Centre’s committee and South Down MLA Colin McGrath.

Before government ministers left the Northern Ireland Executive, Mr McGrath had asked economy minister Gordon Lyons to visit Down Business Centre and see the work that has been going on here.

While this was not possible the MLA was pleased to meet Mr Brennan.

“I have seen first hand the great work the Down Business Centre has been involved in for decades in helping local individuals get their family business up and running and delivering at the heart of our community,” said Mr McGrath.

“I know that over time many of us have become concerned as to the attention that was being given to the Belfast area and that this was not reflected in our smaller towns such as Downpatrick.  This is something I have highlighted in my role as an MLA in the past and will continue to do so.”

Mr McGrath said Mr Brennan’s visit comes at what he described as an “exciting time” for Downpatrick.

“A lot has been happening in the town centre and we need to capitalise on that,” he continued.

“We have the regeneration of Irish Street and a new town committee working cohesively together. And in a few months’ time, Downpatrick will host its first TEDx event to help curate and share ideas,” he revealed.

Mr McGrath added: “Those of us who represent Downpatrick, whether in business, politics or civic life, are proud to do so and can see the potential in our town.

“It’s been great to share that with the Permanent Secretary and I look forward to seeing how Down Business Centre continues to help form and support new and existing businesses into the future.”
