DfI asked to probe persistent flooding in Castlewellan

8 January 2025

THE Department for Infrastructure has been asked to investigate the cause of persistent flooding at the Dublin and Bann roads in Castlewellan and to come up with a solution.

The appeal has been made by South Down MLA Colin McGrath.

He said issues at the Bann Road and the localised road flooding many are familiar with have been outstanding for some time.

“Time and again this issue is brought to the fore and there does not seem to be a resolution in sight. However, I have recently been made aware of additional localised flooding at the Dublin Road, which has been building up over the past year,” the MLA revealed.

Mr McGrath said this creates an issue particularly when cars are moving at high speeds and perhaps don’t notice just how significant the localised flooding is.

“The end result is that vehicles either aquaplane or end up splashing the entrance of a major shop, staff and other customers and this must not be allowed to continue.”

Mr McGrath said he has contacted the government department and asked for an assessment to be carried out and what work is required.

He said it’s important the issue is addressed at the Bann Road to see if this is impacting on the Dublin Road.

Mr McGrath said he’s waiting on an update from the DfI and will raise it again in the New Year the minister at the helm of the department.

“Hopefully, a lasting solution for all those who have been impacted by this issue can be found.”
