Council asked to tackle rats fears at park

NEWRY, Mourne and Down Council has been asked to address a rats problem at Dunleath Park in Downpatrick.

Residents in the area who have raised concern about the issue have been urged to remain vigilant.

South Down MLA Colin McGrath has been approached by a number of residents and has appealed to the local authority to act and take whatever appropriate is necessary.

“Work is ongoing to determine the source of the rodents whose presence may be as a result of protracted rainfall forcing them from various habitats or, it could be the result of works which have been ongoing along the Ballydugan Road.

“It is essential that we know where these pests are coming from and it’s important local people remain alert, dispose of food waste carefully and report any sightings to the council so the situation can be properly monitored.”

Mr McGrath said he has asked council officials to keep the area under review and to provide clear information to residents.

“Our public spaces must be safe, clean and well-maintained,” he said.

“I will continue to liaise with the council to ensure Dunleath Park remains a welcoming space for everyone in Downpatrick.”

Mr McGrath said the council has also offered pest control advice for anyone who wishes to avail of it through its environmental health department.
