Cormac delivers at Irish Open

10 July 2019

ARDGLASS golfer Cormac Sharvin has just had the biggest week of his life.

The 26 year-old was the top Irish finisher at the Dubai Duty Free Irish Open at Lahinch.

He finished joint 15th place on nine-under par to earn the biggest payday of his life, pocketing a cheque for €85,655.

It was almost three times the amount he has earned on the European Challenge Tour so far this season.

Unfortunately, he missed out on securing a dream spot at next week’s Open Championship at Portrush.

After signing off with a final round 70 on Sunday he said: “I felt I didn’t play much different from the first three days. I just missed it on the wrong side too many times, but all in all, it’s a pretty good week.

“It’s a step in the right direction for sure. It shows I can compete out here.

“My confidence has been pretty high, but it’s definitely going to boost that a little.

“It’s my first time being in contention on the European Tour so I’m proud of the way I handled myself on and off the golf course.”

Sharvin, who turned professional after being a member of the winning Britain and Ireland Walker Cup team in 2015, received huge support from friends and family who travelled to the Co Clare venue.

Ranked 479th in the world before the championship began, Sharvin, who mainly plies his trade on the Challenge Tour, cut the figure of someone who belongs on a bigger stage.

He has a classic swing, drives superbly, has a tidy short game and possesses a superb temperament.

“I really felt like I took it one shot at a time out there and did that really well”, he enthused.

A top ten finish would have earned Sharvin a ticket into this week’s Scottish Open and

the potential to claim one of the three spots on offer to next week’s Open at Portrush.

“I’ve tried not to get too bogged down with results and outcome, and that’s just going to come from the process of what I’ve been doing the last year and a half, trying to get to the next level,” he explained.

“I know there’s more there and that will give me confidence.”
