Community play park open in Darragh Cross

12 April 2023

A NEW £100,000 play park has been opened in Darragh Cross.

The state-of-the art community facility is situated at St Mochai’s GAC.

The club says it is delighted to have been able to provide the social space for all the community after consultation.

A spokesperson said: “This project has been almost six years in the making and has had to overcome a few hurdles along the way.

“In addition to the hard work and dedication of our own committee members, the club would like to thank Patrick Brown MLA, Councillor David Lee Surginor and Chris Hazzard MP for their support in making the project happen.

“We’d also like to thank DJ Morgan, from Newry Mourne and Down Council, for his dedication in managing the project and to contractor Garden Escapes for the professional manner in which they carried out the construction.

“We hope it brings years of fun and entertainment to the children of the local area.”

Cllr Lee-Surginor said: “It was wonderful to call down to the new play park and see families enjoying it.

“This is really down to the vision and hard work of the Darragh Cross GAC chair, Pat Mahon, and the rest of the committee, who, supported by council, made this a reality.

“I was delighted to support the work my Alliance colleague, Patrick Brown MLA, had started in ensuring this project got over the line. I hope it brings years of enjoyment to the children of the community.”

Mr Brown also thanked everyone involved in bringing the project to fruition, in particular the committee and members of St Mochai’s GAC.

“ I remember visiting the club in 2017 when this was just an idea floated by the committee,” he said.

“Without their perseverance it’s highly unlikely a site would have been identified and a new play park delivered in this council term. They are a credit to their community.”
